La Crosse, WI - October 21, 2005 — Memphis Light, Gas & Water (MLGW) has developed MLGWMap for viewing CableCad data using NMT Corporation’s LegendSDK. The LegendSDK is a collection of Microsoft® ActiveX® controls that allow you to create custom viewing software with unrestricted access to your GIS data. The MLGWMap product was initially conceived as a map viewer application for field crews with mobile computers but its use has been extended to other locations where the cost of a complete spatial application isn’t warranted.

MLGWMap provides full read and write access to CableCad™ graphics and non-graphics files with a Windows® menu driven GUI for viewing, placing and editing individual graphic items. A macro tool was added for placing graphic items with associated non-graphic records. Using the macro tool, the user can select a pre-defined command, such as “Cable,” from a menu and the application will automatically create a new Cable record, prompt to populate the record fields and place all of the associated graphic items for the Cable using preset graphic attributes.

MLGWMap links to Oracle® and other SQL compliant databases. This link makes it possible to select a CableCad facility on a map and view the database record associated with the CableCad facility. In addition to interactively selecting a single record, MLGWMap will generate reports by tracing or scanning the CableCad records and display the combined CableCad and Oracle data.

The MLGWMap design includes an application layer that is a Windows compliant Graphical User Interface and an interface layer that insulates the application layer from the CableCad map data by calling NMT’s LegendSDK and MLGWMap’s own intermediate code libraries to access the CableCad data files. With this design foundation, MLGWMap can be enhanced by plugging in new intermediate libraries to connect to other map and engineering file formats allowing the user to work with maps and drawings in a variety of native file formats. The layered design also supports rapid prototyping and deployment of new, task-specific applications.

MLGWMap was developed in collaboration with ClearMark Design of Austin, TX.
